EDUCO

Semester or Year in Paris
What better place to learn French than France itself?  Students interested in French benefit enormously from studying abroad, greatly improving their foreign language skills while developing their sensitivity to and understanding of cultural differences.  EDUCO, a consortium of Emory, Duke, Cornell, and Tulane Universities, offers complete academic and cultural immersion in French.  In addition to courses through EDUCO and direct enrollment in courses at the University of Paris, EDUCO provides semester or year students with options for cultural excursions such as French theater outings, art museum visits, and gastronomical tastings.  Students may receive up to 3 courses (12 credits) toward the major in one semester (not to exceed 5 courses in one academic year) and up to 2 courses (8 credits) toward the minor.  Selected students may study at the renowned Institut des Sciences Politiques (Sciences Po).

notre dame

This program is by no means limited to French majors!  Courses in all disciplines are available at the University of Paris, and on-site advisors work carefully with students to help them find classes that will satisfy the requirements of various departments at Emory. In addition, tutors are provided to help students who are experiencing any difficulty in their coursework.

Eligibility
Applicants must have taken five semesters of college-level French or the equivalent, including FREN 310; FREN 314 is highly recommended. Oxford College students applying to go abroad during their 4th semester must have completed either FREN 320 or 323 and must have permission from Academic Affairs at Oxford.

Grades of B or better are required in the pre-requisite French courses.

Living arrangements
Most students are housed with host families; a few stay in international student residence halls; three or four apartments are available, generally only to students staying the entire year.

Cost
Students pay Emory tuition, plus a program fee, which, for Spring 2009, is $4,200.  The total cost covers tuition, housing, several meals a week, and numerous excursions and other cultural activities. (For more specifics, students should consult the budget sheet provided on the CIPA web site.)  Students are eligible to carry existing financial aid and scholarships on Emory-approved study abroad programs. Students on this program may also be eligible to apply for the Benjamin Gilman Scholarship and CIPA Study Abroad Grant.

Don’t pass up this wonderful opportunity, which for most people comes only once in a lifetime.  While you will probably have occasion to travel in Europe later in life, few people ever have the chance to spend an extended period of time in a foreign country living like the locals and getting to know their culture in more than a very superficial way.

For more details on all aspects of EDUCO, visit the EDUCO section of the CIPA site. The website of the EDUCO program in Paris may be viewed at www.educo.asso.fr

The EDUCO contact person for the Department of French and Italian is Professor Elissa Marder (emarder@emory.edu); she would be happy to talk with you in person about study in Paris.
